This relationship between scent and memory is known as the Proust Effect, named after a passage from Marcel Proust’s novel. The Proust Plant is a device that creates a dependency between plants and humans based on the premise that plants need water and humans seek healing (through scent). When the plant’s moisture level decreases, the device releases stored aroma, reminding the person of the plant’s presence and prompting them to water it.
